NHC Looks to Change Defintion of Marina

At the request of a private citizen, the New Hanover County Planning Board considered (and ultimately voted to reject) a proposal that would have set in motion an amendment to the County’s CAMA Land Use Plan regarding the definition of “marina.” BASE spoke in opposition to the request which the Planning Board denied.  The complicating factors and unintended consequences of this change are many. One issue that became problematic is the reduced qualifications for a marina to a threshold of 2 boats. For example, what about a home with 2 kayaks on a dock that runs a kayak fishing charter—is that now a marina? What sort of CAMA permitting process would it have to undergo were it to be damaged in a storm? What about a dock with 2 commercial fishing boats?
