City of Wilmington Adopts Annexation Policy

The Wilmington City Council voted in August to move forward with a long-term annexation policy that would indicate areas of New Hanover County targeted for future annexation. Based on current projections, the annexation could add more than 27,000 residents to the City. As discussed at the City Council meeting, the real estate, development and building communities need to know what areas are under consideration and how that may impact sales and projects.

The policy’s intent is to:

  • Establish guidelines for future annexation decisions
  • Propose a process to inform residents and property owners of future annexations
  • Establish a procedure for future annexations to be considered by the city on a two-year cycle

Potential study areas were considered including areas such as Gordon Road/Dutch Square, Kings Grant, Masonboro South, Ogden, Silva Terra/Arrowhead and Springview/Churchill. Some of these areas were additionally broken down into smaller components. For a full map of impacted areas, go to:
