CITY OF WILMINGTON PASSES CENTRAL BUSINESSS DISTRICT REGULATION AMENDMENTS

After months of roundtable meetings and discussion, Wilmington City Council passed the revised Central Business District (CBD) regulations at its meeting on August 5, 2008. Following lengthy discussion from City staff and Council, the decision was made to pull several specific items from the regulation before moving it forward. The items pulled for further review include provisions regarding demolition of contributing structures, height measurement along N. Front Street, the proposed residential density cap and minimum height issues. At the request of Council, staff has been instructed to pursue further input and study on these issues and bring them back as soon as November. Regarding the “contributing structures” provision, Council suggested that staff look at incentives to encourage CBD property owners to pursue preservation of buildings instead of a blanket limiting of teardowns. BASE staff will continue to monitor the CBD issue as the individual issues are studied.
