New Hanover Commissioners UNANIMOUSLY Approve Special Use Permit Changes

NHCSUP

At their meeting last night, the New Hanover County Commissioners took final action on the Special Use Permit text amendment and changes to the Table of Permitted Uses, passing them UNANIMOUSLY. Below is the joint statement from the business community coalition which requested the support of the Commissioners on this important economic development initiative.

Please thank the following New Hanover County leaders when you see them in the community: Chairman Woody White, Vice Chairman Skip Watkins, Jonathan Barfield, Rob Zapple, Pat Kusek, County Manager Chris Coudriet and Planning Board Chair Donna Girardot. Members of the Planning Board also played an integral role in this effort.

Thanks to Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Wilmington Business Development, Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association and Coalition for Economic Advancement for joining us in crafting a united position. Leadership from each of those organizations played a vital part in the success of this initiative, which has been lingering since 2011. A special thanks to Hal Kitchin for the countless hours he spent working on this issue and, ultimately, bringing the Coastal Federation to the table in support of the business community position.

While this was an important achievement, we must immediately turn our attention to the Unified Development Ordinance drafting process in Wilmington and New Hanover County. The folks that turned out last night opposing the SUP changes will be participating in the UDO process—and we will be there also. Zoning maps, land use classifications and development regulations will all be on the table. It will take all of us working together to ensure that New Hanover County continues to prosper.
