ONSLOW COUNTY PLANNING BEGINS PROCESS OF AMENDING UDO

In September, the Onslow County Planning Board and Board of Adjustment had a joint work session to discuss the Unified Development Ordinance. According to County Planning Staff, the intent is to begin the process of potential ordinance changes this fall, with an anticipated completion date of Fall 2015.

Some of the focus areas identified and items under consideration include:

·         Precise and clear review standards with tailored flexibility

Improve Current Ordinance Requirements

·         Planned unit development regulations

·         Conditional zoning

·         Use-specific standards

·         Parking, buffering, and sign standards

·         Manufactured Home Park / RV Park standards

Subdivisions

·         Cluster option

·         Clearer open space requirements

·         Access, street connectivity, sidewalks

·         Water/Fire protection requirements

·         Administrative approval

Commercial Development Standards

·         Access

·         Signage

·         Building design

Additional Items for Consideration

·         Incentivized Standards

·         Transportation corridors

·         Working lands protection

·         Infrastructure and services for new development

·         Encroachment around military base and airport

·         Protecting established residential areas

·         Variety of housing options
