Pender County board joins insurance suit
By K.J. Williams,

Pender County is the latest municipality to join a lawsuit opposing a nearly 30 percent increase in homeowners insurance rates approved last year by the N.C. Insurance Commission. County commissioners voted 5-0 Monday to join a lawsuit headed by Dare County and Nags Head, and to contribute $5,000 toward legal costs. Commissioner F.D. Rivenbark proposed that Pender kick in $5,000 as its share. "This is an issue for everybody in the county," said Commissioner J. David Williams Jr., speaking in favor of the measure. The insurance increase affects plans purchased in the private market or through the Beach Plan, the informal name for the N.C. Insurance Underwriters Association. New Hanover County commissioners voted to join the legal fight in late January. Other affected coastal counties include Brunswick, Onslow and Carteret counties. Pender County commissioners also requested support from the General Assembly in opposing the rate increases. Sen. Julia Boseman, D-New Hanover, and R.C. Soles, D-Columbus, introduced a bill last month asking for a stay on the rate increase, which took effect Sunday. Friday, a petition asking for a public hearing on the rate increase approved in November, was denied by a hearing officer.
