Brunswick County C&D Landfill Expansion PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 January 2011 09:29
Over the course of the last few months BASE has been monitoring the developing C&D landfill expansion issue in Brunswick County.  A C&D landfill basically stands for construction and demolition waste, and is very a vital element to the real estate industry as many of our construction sites use these types of facilities to remove the by-products of construction, such as wood, siding, shingles, concrete, bricks, etc.  The main concern right now is that the landfill is permitted through March 2014 and is reaching its capacity after the construction boom ramped up the amount of waste it received.  Brunswick County is poised to expand its current landfill facility and last year hired Dewberry Inc. to give the commissioners a full assessment. Without a C&D service close by it certainly poses a significant concern to the building industry.  Essentially if some type of expansion isn’t approved, either a new landfill will need to be built or the county will have to ship more trash out of the county. Both options in the end would cost more time and money.  Household trash is already shipped out of the county to a different type of landfill, known as a material solid waste facility.  So far due to some surrounding concerns from residents the county commissioners have delayed voting on the proposal and at the same time the planning board postponed a much needed rezoning for the property in question.  To address some of the concerns surrounding the expansion the County has held two community meetings, which gave the surrounding citizens the opportunity to weigh in on the issue.  BASE will continue to monitor this issue as it evolves over the course of the next few months.
